Holland Tulip Festival

Holland Tulip Festival
May 11 - 13, 2011
3-day tour

Day 1 - Wednesday, May 11, 2011:
Join us as we travel south through Illinois and east to the Dutch settlement town of Holland, MI. We will stop for lunch (Dutch treat) in Michigan City, IN, at the Bob Evans Restaurant, the home of home style. Upon arrival in Holland, we will check into our hotel, the Fairfield Inn in Holland. In the evening there will be a dinner show (included).

Day 2 - Thursday, May 12, 2011:
Breakfast is included at the hotel. On this morning, we will meet our step-on guide at the Civic Center and take to the streets of Holland to behold the millions of colorful tulips in bloom in parks, private yards, and business fronts. We will enjoy a tour, lunch, and a show (included) at the Evergreen Commons Senior Center, which was featured on CNN and Money Magazine as part of Holland's designation as "One of the Top Five Best Places to Retire."

After the luncheon show, we will attend the Kinderparade where we will have reserved seats. Perhaps the best part of the Holland Tulip Festival is watching the wooden-shoed Klompen dancers take to the streets to perform traditional Dutch folk dances. Authentic right down to the street scrubbing, you'll feel as though you've been whisked back in time to a Netherlands of 200 years ago! Then it's back to the tour where we'll next visit Windmill Island. This unusual 30-acre park features canals, a drawbridge, a miniature Dutch village, extensive tulip gardens, and an operational 1780's windmill from the Netherlands. In the evening we will have dinner at a local church (included).

In the evening we will attend the show given by the festival's headliner, yet to be announced.

Day 3 - Friday, May 13, 2011:
Breakfast is included at the hotel. On this day we will visit the Nelis' Dutch Village, a recreation of the Netherlands of 100 years ago, where noon lunch is included. Here we can enjoy dancing, period costumes, architecture and gardens, as well as two of the rides and attractions: a "draaimolen" or carousel, and a "sweefmolen" or swing ride. Don't miss a trip to the "Heksenwaag" or witches weigh-house, which will determine guilt or innocence of witchcraft, with a signed and sealed certificate to prove your innocence! One of the prize possessions of the Dutch Village is the "Gouden Engel", the second largest Dutch street organ ever made. Following lunch we will journey home, filling with fond memories of Holland, Michigan.
