Oktoberfest in Frankenmuth, MI
September 16 - 18, 2010
3-day tour
Day 1 - Thursday, September 16, 2010:
Our morning travel will take us through Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana with a destination of
Frankenmuth, Michigan (with our usual break and lunch stops throughout the day). Frankenmuth is
known as Little Bavaria, the land of lederhosen and accordion music. We'll spend the next two
nights at the Hampton Inn in Saginaw, MI. Our included evening meal will be a German sampler at
the Bavarian Inn. Enjoy portions of "Kasseler Rippchen" (smoked pork chops), "Sauerbraten
(breaded veal cutlet) served with dressing, and "Kartoffel Kaseknodel" (potato cheese dumplings).
Day 2 - Friday, September 17, 2010:
In the morning, we'll tour the city of Frankenmuth, with an atmosphere like that found in the
Bavarian part of Germany. Frankenmuth is filled with Old World delights. There are many lovely
sights to see, including such delights imported from Germany as: the Glockenspiel, which houses a
magnificent 35-bell carillon, a beautiful figurine movement and an illuminated clock. The clock
sounds the 5-bell Westminster Chime, the Glockenspiel plays several selections, and the figurine
movement depicts the legend of the Pied Piper of Hameln. Other interesting sites include the
Frankenmuth Cheese Hause, and Schnitzelbank Shop, not to mention the residential area and rich
farmland. We will also go to Bronner's Christmas Store. This enormous store is the size of four
football fields and is filled with thousands of ornaments, garlands, lights, and much more. It's
a shopper's dream, especially for Christmas lovers!
Then it's off to a traditional German celebration, Oktoberfest. This is a traditional celebration
of German beer that originated in Munich in 1810 (to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince
Ludwig). In Germany it takes place over a sixteen-day period, and includes the world's largest
fair. It's considered an important part of German culture, with an estimated six million people
in attendance each year. Annually, Frankenmuth celebrates the festival the third full weekend of
September. In fact Frankenmuth's celebration is the only Oktoberfest outside of Germany that's
officially sanctioned by the city of Munich. The Frankenmuth Oktoberfest will be celebrating 20
years in 2009!
Day 3 - Saturday, September 18, 2010:
Breakfast is included at the hotel. After breakfast, we board our motor coach and begin our
journey home. On the way, we'll stop in Paw Paw, MI, at the family-owned St. Julian Winery -
Michigan's oldest, largest, and most awarded winery. This winery offers tours and tasting rooms
and a wonderful experience for our trip home. After the winery, we'll continue home with great
friends and wonderful memories in our hearts of our tour to Oktoberfest at Frankenmuth.
